Main works construction starts on new Westmead Integrated Mental Health Complex

Construction of the new $540 million Westmead Integrated Mental Health Complex is officially underway marking a major milestone in the delivery of the largest mental health facility in NSW.  

The Complex will bring together acute, sub-acute and non-acute services from the Cumberland Hospital West campus and Westmead Hospital. 

The new facility will address the growing demand for mental health services and deliver contemporary, best-practice care for Western Sydney communities.  

The new health facility will be connected to Westmead Hospital via a new link bridge, providing convenient access to other clinical services and facilities, including the Emergency Department, making it easier for patients to access and receive better integrated care. 

The new Westmead Integrated Mental Health Complex will include:  

• Acute mental health beds including beds for youth, adolescents, adults, older persons and people living with eating disorders  

• Mental health intensive care and high dependency units  

• A mental health assessment area  

• Sub and non-acute mental health beds  

• Multidisciplinary ambulatory and outpatient mental health and support services.   

A new Psychiatric Emergency Care Centre is also being delivered as part of the project. This centre will enhance patient assessment, referral, and overall service integration, aligning with the Emergency Department at Westmead Hospital.   

Courtyards, gardens, social spaces, calming rooms and welcoming reception areas are among the highlights of the purpose-built facility, which will deliver new and expanded mental health care facilities.  

The Complex has been designed with consumers and health staff to ensure the new facilities support consumer wellbeing, enable new models of care, and provide safe, welcoming and person-centred care, along with modern working environments for staff. 

Richard Crookes Construction was engaged as the main works contractor following a competitive tender process last year. Construction of the Integrated Mental Health Complex is expected to be completed in 2027.
